Original Interview by ShoutOut LA

We had the good fortune of connecting with Christan Van Slyke and we’ve shared our conversation below

Christan Van Slyke

Hi Christan, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?

I have always enjoyed the arts since I was a wee one; whether it be drawing or film and writing. In high school I started writing songs for the bands I was in, and entering short stories into contests. As I got a bit older, I realized my passion in art was mainly based in film and writing. I started pursuing filmmaking head on in 2008.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I’m a multi international award winning, multi optioned screenwriter/producer, based in Texas, who loves to collaborate with other honest, like minded creatives! I’ve been blessed with over 500 wins/accolades via festival circuit for Screenwriting over the years and obtained my Master Screenwriting Certification in 2010. I’m a go-getter and am always eager to get the job done as well as possible the first go around. I think by consistency and continuing to practice and fine-tune my writing skills I have been able to be somewhat successful on this journey, along with a big dose of faith! I’m hopeful for a brighter future ahead! I believe hard work pays off, so does faith! I do enjoy exploring all genres when writing, however my favorite genres to write are usually character-driven and most often times include encouraging and inspiring themes, with a hint of dark comedy. I also enjoy writing a solid, relevant post-apocalyptic thriller every now and then!

I am currently represented by Nuala Quinn-Barton and Mania Entertainment. We are in active development stages for our upcoming coming of age, comedy feature film, Lover Haters Club, with Hayley Kiyoko set to guest star. Also AMP Studios, TV Pilot, is set to move into production with April Morrison Productions in August! And we’re just wrapping up production for Combobulate, a Rivertree Production, in Canada, and will be moving into post-production and seeking distribution. I am accustomed to writing on assignment but I also have several available original features and shorts that I am actively seeking production interest and opportunities! Links below!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

I’m quite a homebody and always appreciate the little things like a great Mexican restaurant, cooking a big feast for loved ones, or simply sitting with a good cup of coffee on the porch, watching the birds and butterflies, Catching a good flick at home or the theater with some frozen yogurt afterwards, or enjoying a nature walk is about as adventurous as I get. I’d certainly be able to show whoever is around how to appreciate the little blessings that surround us daily.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

My family, my mom, husband and children specifically, have always been incredibly supportiveof my creative ventures. I owe a very special shout out to my incredibly patient husband who has been my rock through the ups and downs. I have many friends and peers in the industry as well that continue to encourage and support me on this wild roller coaster journey! I am grateful for everyone’s encouragement, especially during those times of discouragement.
